School Health Advocacy Day is the only youth-driven advocacy event that supports school-based health services in Oregon. It is an opportunity for youth from across Oregon to come together, attend various educational, skill-building workshops, connect with community organizations, meet legislators, and advocate for the importance of school-based health services in their communities. The 2024 theme is Combating Youth Mental Health Crisis Through Accessible Healthcare.

The event will be hybrid this year, so youth are welcome to attend either virtually or in person in Salem. For those who are attending in person, there will be food provided, as it is an all-day event. There will also be transportation scholarships available for those who need support in getting to the event location.

The morning of the event will consist of speakers, networking, workshops, and presentations for youth to attend. Additionally, youth will be prepared for the day by practicing advocacy skills such as giving an elevator speech or a legislative testimony. In the afternoon, youth will have legislative meetings where they will speak with their legislators. There will also be time for networking with various organizations.

Registration is now open! If you are a School-Based Health coordinator in Oregon and interested in bringing a group of youth to 2024 School Health Advocacy Day, please register for you and your group here! This gives us a chance to plan for an estimated number of people, as well as provide you with materials and training to prepare for the event.  Please complete registration by February 1st, 2024 at the latest.

Get our official event app, Whova, here on your phone! Once we have finalized the agenda, materials and speaker bios, they will be accessible to view on the app. Attending virtually? Check out our Whova website that is just like the app to get the inside scoop on all things for School Health Advocacy Day!

Another resource is our Advocacy Day Google Drive. We are working to upload preparation materials, handouts and data graphics to support you so those documents are coming soon!

For PPS students, Advocacy Day qualifies as a CRLE (Career Related Learning Experience), so a great added bonus in attending this event and getting that requirement out of the way for graduation!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact OSBHA Youth Engagement Coordinator, Asia Gates (she/her) at asia@osbha.org
